I am writting an answer for this question for a creative residency submission that aims to help emerging artists in the field of dance and creative coding.
Question: Tell us about yourself and your artistic interests that you feel is relevant to the application - please provide URL links to your work to support your statement
My answer: We are Uncharted Limbo, a collective of creative coders and visual artists who craft ground-breaking New Media experiences and artworks at the unlikely intersections of code, interactive visuals & performing arts.
With professional backgrounds in the fields of Architecture, Computational Design, Game & Software Development, Visual Effects and 3D Art, we collaborate closely with choreographers, film directors, musicians and scientists to create diverse digital artworks across a broad range of scales: from interactive dance performances to immersive film-making; from large-scale installations to computationally designed sculptures; from 360 dome projections to educational gamified experiences.
Inspired by the forceful beauty of natural phenomena, the volatile complexity of organic growth, and the intoxicating sophistication of the human movement, we weave visual aesthetics and storytelling with the latest advances in computational geometry, real-time simulation, motion capture, machine learning and game technology; the results often take the form of imaginary worlds with arbitrary rules, where Digital Matter and Digital Life thrive and decay, evolve and transmute, react to the presence of us humans and augment our physical surroundings.
Our work materialises as holographic projections during live performances, digital films, VR experiences, interactive screen-based museum exhibits and 360 dome projections and has appeared in institutions and festivals such as the BFI Film Festival, the Sadler’s Wells Theatre, the VRHAM festival, the Arte European Culture TV channel and the CULTVR Lab immersive theatre.
We’re approaching this application with an idea that has been brewing within our team for a while, an urge to address the important questions of agency and emergent sentience of digital entities.
Our experience in coding and art-directing real-time visuals for dance performances and interactive installations, led us to a profound conundrum:
Is there anything beyond the typical “accompanying visuals” and “one-way reactivity” seen in most New Media performances?
Can we go deeper than artfully remapping a set of numbers from one range to another?
What if a truly sentient, algorithmic being with its own expectations, thought processes and agency existed, and became an active participant and equal performer in the show?
Put simply, can thinking machines perform alongside humans?
Those questions took form during the production of our interactive dance performance “Anti-body” that was developed in collaboration with Alexander Whitley Dance Company.
Can you help me make this text a little more catchy for a submission and add a conclusion that I am nwow missing at the end? Remeber to stick to a 400 word limit
